Every construction company contains a construction supervisor, but what makes an effective supervisor? A supervisor must contain certain characteristics and qualities that help aid in construction projects. Here are 10 ways to be an effective construction supervisor:

1. Trust

Any relationship, whether it is work related or not, is nothing without trust. Having trust within a company is the foundation of good work ethic and higher productivity levels. To build better trust, it is important to communicate with each worker and let your team know that you are always there for them.

 2. Appreciation

Many construction companies have noticed that a simple act of appreciation such as a “thank you”, goes a long way. When workers get acknowledged for their hard work, they will be more likely to perform at their best. Not only is it good to hear, it will motivate them and create a positive environment.

3. Power Dynamic

Being a construction supervisor, many people often abuse their superiority within the company. It is vital to work by influence rather than power itself. The team is constantly looking up to their supervisor for advice or directions, so it is important to be aware and work with each other.

4. Be Fair

As for any job, no one wants to see certain workers treated differently. By treating everyone fair and just, it will illuminate any negative emotions from forming and create a better work environment for everyone involved.

5. Respect

Respect goes hand in hand with being fair. No one wants to feel scared or threatened by their superior. Having respect towards everyone will prevent any harsh connections between supervisors and workers, and this will also prevent any excessive stress that might happen leading to a more effective work ethic.

6. Positive

Attitudes are contagious. When a worker sees a supervisor feeling negative or down, they will most likely pick up on this and become the same way. Keeping a positive mindset will benefit the whole company.

7. Connect the Team

Aside from aiding the team’s productivity and assigning roles, a construction supervisor also has the responsibility of connecting the team. Part of this comes from creating a collaborative mindset. No job can be done by one person, and when this mindset is installed, the team will enjoy working together and get projects done more efficiently.
