Retention ponds are built in urban areas where concrete or asphalt does not allow runoff to drain properly and are at risk of flooding. These structures protect homes and businesses from flooding as well as lower the impact of erosion to infrastructure. 

 

What is a Retention Pond? 

Retention ponds are man-made pools of water designed to hold excess storm runoff to prevent flooding. The water is eventually treated and distributed out slowly to minimize damage.

 

What are the benefits of Retention Ponds?

 

  • Reduce flood risk: During storms, the runoff from rain has to go somewhere. These man-made reservoirs provide that area.

 

  • Water Storage: Retention ponds or retention basins are designed to hold water. The runoff from storms eventually drains to other rivers and streams but does so slowly to prevent flooding.

 

  • Create aquatic habitat: A retention pond will allow for new habitats and aquatic biodiversity. 

 

  • Reduce erosion: When designed properly, runoff carrying sediment will be trapped in the retention pond and can be removed during maintenance. 

 

  • Remove urban pollutants: Storm runoff can and does cause water contamination. Retention ponds treat this water naturally without additional equipment being installed.

 

  • Reduce the chance of risk to rivers, streams and city sewer systems: Because runoff is treated through sedimentation to add nutrients and remove pollutants, the water is safely added to streams and rivers over time. Sewer systems are also protected from being overloaded by the storm runoff.
