The construction industry is one of the nation’s largest industries, as the market size was valued at around $1.8 trillion in 2022. The industry continues to grow and evolve as new technologies emerge. Some of the major construction trends include increased AI usage and sustainable construction.

Responsible Use of AI

While AI is still in its infancy, its uses are limitless. Particularly in the architecture and design sector of the construction process, AI can be an extremely helpful tool in increasing efficiency in project design, scheduling, safety, and compliance. AI is still a very new tool and using it wisely is essential. However, leveraging AI can streamline many aspects of construction and is certainly a rising construction trend in the industry as a whole.

Sustainable Construction

The buildings and construction industry accounts for 37% of global emissions. Sustainable construction is increasingly on the rise in an effort to combat the carbon emissions and waste that is generated during projects. The International Energy Agency has  “The Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario (NZE Scenario)” which has contributed to many new builds using sustainable construction practices and green energy.

Additionally, sustainability has become a large priority in the industry due to the federal government’s “Buy Clean Initiative.” This initiative provides a large incentive for sustainable materials in the form of tax credits. There are many benefits to this trend, and it’s definitely on the rise.

Repurposing Older Buildings

While new builds are still very popular, repurposing old buildings rather than demolishing them has become a trend in the U.S. in recent years. In Houston particularly, 10 blocks of former railroad buildings and warehouses from the 1920s to 1940s are in the process of being restored and transformed into a pedestrian-friendly hub of restaurants, parks, and shops. This is happening all over the country in cities like Chicago, New York, and Baltimore.

All in all, the construction industry is constantly growing and evolving with the introduction of new technologies. This helps assure the construction industry is at the forefront of innovation and a major player in the economy.
